No decent society should tolerate hatred toward minorities. Harassment, discrimination, exclusion, and violence directed at individuals because of their identity, whether religious, ethnic, sexual, or cultural, are morally wrong, civically corrosive, and psychologically damaging. At the same time, pluralistic societies must also preserve the freedom to debate, criticise, and even reject ideologies, doctrines, and belief systems. Protecting people and scrutinising ideas are not contradictory principles; they are both essential to a free society.
When it comes to Muslims, this distinction becomes particularly important. Hostility toward Muslim individuals or communities, what should be called Anti-Muslim Hatred or anti-Muslim bigotry, is unjust and must be opposed unequivocally.
